Mani Local Government Area, one of the seven old local government areas in Katsina State, has for decades been bedevilled by challenges in the areas of healthcare and education which have confronted the area which many other challenges.
The common feature in health centers in the villages and some wards was delapidated infrastructure, shortage of qualified manpower which include doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and laboratory technicians; absence of drugs and essential medical supplies, worn-out furniture and broken down ceilings, doors and windows. Some of the health centers have been taken over by lizards and other reptiles.
In the area of education, the primary and secondary schools in Mani were as dilapidated or even more dilapidated than the health care centers, as they were also characterized by shortage of qualified teachers, lack of teaching and learning materials, broken down furniture, doors, windows and ceilings, and inadequate number of schools to absorb the high number of pupils and students considering the huge population of the local government area.
However, the turning point came in April, 2022, when Dr. Yunusa Muhammad Sani Bagiwa was elected as the Chairman of Mani Local Government Council, and a year later when Malam Dikko Umar Radda was sworn in as the Katsina State governor.
Since then, the education and healthcare sectors among other key sectors began to witness great improvement which is now restoring Mani's place as an old local government area that should be at par with other LGA's in its league.
While on a tour of schools in Mani, the Katsina Times crew found out that more than ten schools across the local government area have either been renovated and expanded or are under renovation and expansion.
Durbi Ta Kusheyi Primary School which has been abandoned for 15 years, has now been overhauled by the local government council with eight new classrooms constructed and fully furnished, with blackboards, furniture and other essential infrastructure and learning facilities.
Bagiwa Primary School which was also left to rot for four years has also been renovated. Now the school has a brand new roofing, floors, ceilings, doors and windows, blackboards and a block of new classrooms.
Magami Community School which was taken over by the state government has also been completely renovated and expanded. Records show that up to N400 million was injected in the school, making it one of the best and most furnished schools in the local government area.
The same brand of renovation and expansion was carried out in the secondary schools in Tsagem and Bagiwa which has greatly improved school enrollment and enhanced the learning environment in these schools.
In total, the Dikko Radda-led administration in collaboration with the AGILE project has expended over N1 billion on the expansion and rehabilitation of secondary schools across Mani Local Government Area while more work is still being carried out in the schools.
To firther boost qualitative manpower in schools across the state, Governor Dikko Radda employed a total of 7,000 teachers across the state. Being a progressive administrator, Dr. Yunusa Bagiwa also boosted this number with 130 more teachers who were posted to the various primary and secondary schools across the local government area.
In the area of healthcare which is one of the cardinal sectors in the administrations strategic development roadmap, five comprehensive healthcare centers have been renovated and equipped; with regular supply of drugs and other essential medical supplies to the hospitals.
The CHCs are allocated in Tsagem, Bagiwa, Randawa, Magami and Bujawa while the sixth is the Comprehensive Health Center in Duwan which is also under rehabilitation. The PHC in Durbi Ta Kusheyi and Kwatta have also been scheduled for renovation.
One interesting aspect of the renovation of these health care centers is the construction of staff quarters in the hospitals to accommodate doctors and nurses, in order to make it more convenient for them to stay within the hospital premises.
Moreover, a very ingenious step taken by Dr. Yunusa Bagiwa out is the engagement of doctors on part-time basis to provide services at seven hospitals and comprehensive health care centers across the local government area. These hospitals and CHCs are those in Maduru, Jani, Magami, Duwan, Bujawa, Kwatta, and another PHC in Mani town.
This measure has brought specialized medical care closer to the people while providing a model for other local government councils to emulate for the overall development of the health sector in the state.
The local government council has also concluded plans to upgrade many dispensaries to Primary Healthcare Centers, starting with three which have been included in the local government council's 2025 budget.
Mani Local Government Council also carries out routine medical outreach which entails free medical operation for hernia patients and giving them free drugs. One of such medical outreach programs was recently carried out in Bagiwa where dozens of patients were treated and given free drugs.
However, one pressing issue that remains is the dilapidated state of the General Hospital in Mani while the General Hospitals in the six other old local government areas have been renovated. The Mani Local Government Council Chairman, Dr. Yunusa Bagiwa disclosed that Governor Dikko Umar Radda has concluded plans to commence the rehabilitation of the hospital in the first quarter of this year, 2025.
